CadenzovaThe short answer, the table, and what to do with a hashtag list built for the old limit of 30.
Instagram allows a maximum of 5 hashtags on a post or Reel, down from 30, a change announced in December 2025.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Maximum hashtags per post or Reel | 5 |
| Before December 2025 | 30 |
| Do hashtags in the first comment count? | Yes, reports say caption and first comment share the same 5 |
| Stories | Reported to have their own limit; not confirmed by Instagram in the sources we found |
| Maximum caption length | 2,200 characters (about 125 show before "…more") |
Some developer documentation still lists 30, so treat older pages that say 30 as out of date. Instagram's Help Center is the reference to check.
| Platform | Character limit | Hashtags Cadenzova uses by default |

Only Instagram's number is a hard platform cap. The others are Cadenzova's defaults based on how each platform is used, not rules.
Five per post or Reel. Instagram reduced the limit from 30 to 5 in December 2025.
Reports say yes: the caption and the first comment share the same five.
They help Instagram categorise a post, but a keyword-rich caption matters at least as much, so use a few specific hashtags rather than many broad ones.
